Back in 2010 when I had a music publisher, they sent me a brief for a television ad in the hope that I might have a suitable song to help punt some corporate brand. I’ve never been keen on doing ads, but making money in music was getting harder, so I decided to give it a go. I didn’t have anything suitable for this particular brief, but I’d had the first two lines of a song floating around my brain for a week or two, and they seemed to have the right sort of feeling the ad people were looking for. I wrote and recorded the minute-long song, Buttoned, and was pretty pleased with it, and apparently the corporation in question quite liked it too. But then they decided to completely overhaul the idea for the ad, which rendered my song useless. A few days later I was reading a doom-and-gloom article about the continual decline of the music industry, and how the album as a concept is moribund – which turned out not to be quite true, of course – and how these days it’s all about The Song, the individual, downloadable hit single. So I had a brainwave: I would write and record a ten-track album that would fit on the classic single format, the 45 rpm 7” vinyl record. I persuaded My Better Half to take our son out for most of an unusually sunny June weekend and locked myself in the flat to write and record TEN SHORT SONGS FOR MODERN LOVERS. Chemikal Underground then graciously released the 7” single in October of the same year, and it sold out pretty quickly. It was never really meant to be available digitally – obviously that kind of defeats its original purpose – but on its 10th anniversary, in an ever-changing world where LP sales seem to grow every year and sweatshop streaming platforms battle to reduce their already miniscule royalty rates, I now present it here. More for posterity than anything else, really – I’m quite proud of some of these wee songs, they’re not bad for a weekend’s work.
